Protecting 'means of escape'
03/09/2013

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 transfers the responsibility for fire safety from the fire authorities to whoever has day-to-day control of building premises. This person must take steps to reduce the risk from fire, consider how to contain a fire should one break out and then also ensure people can escape safely.

Fire doors and all passive fire protection products play a unique role in the fire safety of a building and therefore in reducing risk to those in other compartments. Properly maintained doors form an essential element of the fire safety plan for every building.

Firewatch can give you advice on the best way to keep your fire doors doing what they should do, protecting the means of escape .Our specialist division Brunel Maintenance have many years experience repairing, replacing and maintaining all kinds of fire doors as well as installing other types of intumescent products.
Brunel Maintenance is an approved installer of the industry leading Lorient acoustic, smoke and fire containment systems.

Responsibility for fire safety including the maintenance of fire doors and fire escapes, rests with whoever has day-to-day control of building premises; and this applies to virtually all commercial premises such as pubs, nightclubs, hotels and warehouses but not too purely domestic premises occupied by a single family group. The 'responsible' person must take steps to reduce the risk from fire; consider how to contain a fire should one break out and then also ensure people can escape safely.

A fire door assembly plays an essential role in the compartmentation of a building, acting as a barrier to the passage of flames and hot gases; delaying the spread of fire for a designated period of time, and protecting the escape routes for the building's occupants. An essential component of the fire door assembly are the door seals, which when properly located and secured prevent the passage of cold smoke, fire, hot smoke and sound.
